Event information

Registrations for this event are closed.

Purchasing tickets to this event registers your intention to march with the Tritons at Mardi Gras in 2020. This includes your $50 non-refundable deposit. Total costs will be around $100  (we will be driving down costs the more people that join).

Please read the following carefully, as it contains important information on what you can expect.

Mardi Gras in 2020

Mardi Gras is in Sydney on Saturday the 29th of February 2020.

This is during the weekend following IGLA. Several floats are from groups participating at IGLA including the Tritons and we expect many international water polo and aquatics players to join us. Partners of active Tritons are also welcome.

Mardi Gras is an amazing experience. And this year is on track to be our best year yet! As in previous years, the Tritons will be performing a choreographed danced routine behind a ute carrying sound and lighting equipment. We'll be marching in speedos and have a few other fun costume items to add. While you may feel this is daunting, most people who march for the first time find it deeply rewarding.

The Mardi Gras theme this year is "what matters".

We believe that what matters is dependent on the individual. And what matters to you matters to me. So, in the registration that follows you'll be asked for something that matters to you (in 9 characters or less).

You'll get to wear your choice of word as part of the parade.

It doesn't need to be deep or the-most-important-thing-ever. And please feel free to use one of ours: 😊

Family, Friends, Love, Peace, Climate, Community, Inclusion, Expression, Identity, Health, Openness, Vivacity, Happiness, Respect, Balance, Lightness, Nature, Sport, Diversity, Hope, Faith, Patience, Freedom

Take this chance to reflect on what's important to your.

Cost

This non-refundable deposit is for AU$50 +BF and allows us to make orders in time for the parade. There will be a second payment of around AU$50 before the parade (the more people that sign up, the less there will be).

You'll need to supply your own speedos. If you have the Tritons "IGLA 2020" speedos then these will go best with the other costume items. Otherwise, wear your club waterpolo speedos or whatever you have.

You should also bring red sneakers with laces that you can rethread, if possible.

You get to keep your togs and costume/supplies.

On Friday night we are having an optional group dinner at Bad Mama for approximately AU$35 +BF for those that wish to attend.

You'll have to arrange your own accommodation and flights. Please do reach out to other Tritons to share accommodation.

We want to keep these costs down as much as possible, and the number of people who sign up will be a determining factor in the final cost. While the Tritons must recover costs, we do not want this to be a limiting factor for you. So please contact socialbrisbanetritons@gmail.com if this is an issue.

There are 80 spots available in the parade served on a first-come-first-served basis.

Important update for code of conduct

For the first time, SBS will be broadcasting the parade live on free-to-air TV.

Mardi Gras is a major and professionally run event. Marching in the parade is a very special privilege. We are very honoured to be invited to march in the pride parade of another city for the 4th time. You are representing the Tritons on the national stage. Unlike in previous years, there is no opportunity to edit the parade before it is broadcast.

You are required to familiarise yourself with our code of conduct attached to this event page.

In addition, anyone who is intoxicated or behaving inappropriately or may risk our image will be removed from the parade. The float marshal's decision on this is final and fees are non-refundable. There will be no warning.

We would rather have fun rather than police behaviour. So please help us make this a great event for everyone including your organising sub-commitee :)

What you can expect next

After registrations close, you'll be added to a private FB group for further updates.

We will organise opportunities to learn the choreography in this group. We will record these sessions so that anyone who is unable to attend can learn.

You'll recieve a seperate invite to RSVP to our group dinner.

You are encouraged to arrive in Sydney by Friday the 28th if possible:

  • We will be giving everyone their togs and costumes/supplies around 3PM AEDT in Hyde Park
  • We will be having a group dinner at Bad Mama on Friday night

Saturday is usually a long day and Mardi Gras are strict about the schedule of our movements. We'll be able to offer more information closer to the day.
